Download sample files

  1. Download the files below.
  2. Use WinZIP (or equivalent) to unpack these files.
  3. Use the File > Import menu command (most 3D programs have something like this) to import the files.
  4. In some programs, you will need to scale down the objects (this can sometimes done within the Import dialog box).
  5. Some DXF importers import Tree Druid trees as three separate objects (Branches, Trunk, Leaves). You can group them together immediately after import, if you want to move the tree around as one object.
  6. You can also view the ASCII contents of the files using any text editor.

NOTE: These files were generated by Win32 standalone versions of Thor and Tree Druid version 1.4. The Standalone versions of Thor and Tree Druid are capable of generating many more models! Please contact us at , if you have any problems with these files...

NOTE: Be sure to give your applications enough memory!
The tree with leaves contains about 14,000 triangle facets!

About DXF and OBJ file formats

DXF R12 files

DXF files, invented by AutoCAD, can be imported by many CAD and 3D graphics programs, including Ray Dream Studio 5, Caligari Truespace 4, Metacreations Bryce 3D and 4.0, Studio Pro 2.5.3, Amapi 4, Cinema 4DXL, et.al. Thør and Tree Druid output files conform to the R12 version of the DXF spec.

Advantages:

  • Can be imported by many programs
  • Human readable format (ASCII text)
  • Tree Druid puts trunk, branches, and leaves into separate groups

Disadvantages:

  • Files can get very large
  • Files cannot contain UV coordinates (texture mapping information)

OBJ files

OBJ files, invented by Alias/Wavefront, can also be imported by many 3D graphics programs. Thør and Tree Druid output files conform to the 2.11 version of the OBJ spec (ASCII file format). Texture coordinates are the same as used in the Ray Dream Studio 5 plugins.

NOTE: Currently, all Tree Druid triangles are separate, and edges are not welded together.

Advantages:

Disadvantages:

  • Files can get very large (there is a binary version of the OBJ format, but it is not implemented by Thør and Tree Druid)
  • Cannot be imported by Studio Pro or AMAPI
