Getting started

An electric arc oscillating between two orbs is de rigueur for the home page of any graphics enthusiast. As you will see in this tutorial, creating an awesome electrical arc is a snap using ThØr!

Arc Final Render

Drag and drop the ThØr icon Thor icon into the scene.

Typically an arc is comprised of one segment, so go to the Model room, and set the Number slider in the Segments box to 1. Since this single segment is the focal point of the animation, increase the Erraticness slider in the Segments box to 100% and increase the Spiral slider in the Segments box to 26%.

Segments dialog

A single twisty bolt is displayed. Arrange (i.e. scale and align) the bolt between the two orbs.

Shading

Select the electrical arc, and go to the Texture room.

Change the object color to white. Change the glow to white. The shader dialog will look something like this:

If you like, follow the instructions from the Lightning Bolt tutorial, to add a 3D Aura effect.

Animation

Go to the Model room. Pull up the time line from the bottom of the screen, and move the Time Line marker to the two-second mark. In the Segments dialog, set the Flicker Cycle slider to 100%. This will cause the bolt to flicker between the two orbs.

Render...that was easy!
